        "content": "<p>Mangrove forest endangered<\/p>\n<p>AMBON, Maluku: Massive exploitation of the mangrove forest on<br>\nthe northern coast of Buru island here by locals over the past<br>\nfew years has threatened the forest's existence.<\/p>\n<p>\"The mangrove potential is huge, but now it's almost gone due<br>\nto massive cutting by locals,\" the head of the local forestry<br>\noffice, Soewardjo Martokusumo, was quoted by Antara as saying<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Soewardjo said local people had been using the mangrove forest<br>\nto collect fire wood for their medicinal oil brewery industry.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting the results of field observations, Soewardjo said the<br>\nmangrove forest had been massively exploited because it was the<br>\nclosest available fuel source.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent more damage, he said the office had launched a<br>\nsustained campaign disseminating information on the impacts<br>\nshould the mangrove forest disappear from the area.
