        "content": "<p>Managing forests<\/p>\n<p>The government&apos;s policy to turn private forest concession<br>\ncompanies into BUMN state-owned enterprises, putting 49 percent<br>\nof the shares in the hands of the government, is a positive<br>\nmeasure.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia, whose territory covers 191.93 million hectares, has<br>\n143.9 million hectares of forest, which is 75 percent of the<br>\ntotal land surface.<\/p>\n<p>The preservation of our virgin forests is obviously a long-<br>\nterm enterprise, since maintaining a sound living environment<br>\ninvolves safeguarding both the quantity and the quality of our<br>\nassets.<\/p>\n<p>During the fourth and fifth development periods it was proven<br>\nthat reforestation funds were used only to replant the visible<br>\nouter rims of forests. Much of the damage done in central areas<br>\nwas left unrepaired.<\/p>\n<p>The whole scheme must be re-examined to see if private forest<br>\nconcessionaires have managed their areas in accordance with the<br>\nenvironmental impact analyses, so our forests and our development<br>\nefforts can be sustained.<\/p>\n<p>-- Pikiran Rakyat, Bandung<\/p>",
