Man tried for extorting envoy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A homeless man appeared in the Central Jakarta
\nDistrict Court yesterday on a charge of extorting money from
\nPalestinian Authority Ambassador Ribhi Awad.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor, Roskanedi, said the extortion attempt was cut
\nshort when the ambassador shot the 24-year-old defendant,
\nHariyanto, in the left foot in an act of self-defense.<\/p>\n
He alleged Hariyanto approached the ambassador after he
\nstopped his car to change a flat tire about 9.30 p.m. near the
\nPhilippine Embassy on Jl. Imam Bonjol, in Menteng, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Roskanedi said the defendant offered to change the tire.<\/p>\n
The ambassador agreed and provided Hariyanto with the tools he
\nneeded to change the tire. Ribhi then gave Hariyanto Rp 20,000
\n(US$5.7).<\/p>\n
Roskanedi said Hariyanto was apparently dissatisfied with the
\npayment and asked for more money.<\/p>\n
When the ambassador refused and got into his car, the
\ndefendant reached through the car's driver-side window, which was
\nstill open, and grabbed the keys, he said.<\/p>\n
"The ambassador had to shoot the defendant through the rear
\ncar door, hitting Hariyanto in the left foot."<\/p>\n
The defendant managed to board a public bus and escaped, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The ambassador found the keys on the ground and drove to a
\nnearby police station to report the incident.<\/p>\n
Roskanedi said the police arrested the defendant at midnight
\nat Pelni Hospital in Petamburan, West Jakarta, where Hariyanto
\nsought medical treatment for his wounded foot.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor said Hariyanto told police that he had
\nintentionally dropped nails on the street to flatten the tires of
\npassing cars.<\/p>\n
The defendant did not know that the man he tried to con was
\nthe Palestinian ambassador, he said.<\/p>\n
Roskanedi said the defendant was charged under Article 368 of
\nthe Criminal Code and if found guilty he faces a maximum penalty
\nof nine month in jail.<\/p>\n
He said the court may impose the maximum penalty because the
\nvictim was a foreign ambassador.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Imam Purnomo adjourned the trial until next
\nweek to hear testimony from witnesses. (jun)<\/p>",
