Man questioned over swindling of Pakistanis<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police have started questioning a local man
\nfor his alleged role in cheating and defaming two Pakistani
\ntourists.<\/p>\n
Spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Haryoko told The Jakarta Post over
\nthe weekend that police detectives have found strong evidence,
\nduring their investigations, that Rauf Afero tried to cheat and
\nframe Muhammad, 25, and Usman, 26.<\/p>\n
Bambang gave no details about the amount of money or when and
\nhow Rauf met the two tourists.<\/p>\n
After a series of investigations, police came to a preliminary
\nconclusion that Rauf had allegedly borrowed an amount of cash
\nfrom the two tourists, which he later refused to return when the
\nvisiting Pakistanis asked him to, they said.<\/p>\n
Rauf then invited the two tourists to stay at his house on Jl.
\nGunung Sahari in Central Jakarta, the city police spokesman said.<\/p>\n
On Sunday morning, June 11, Rauf was still unable to pay back
\nhis debt, making the two tourists angry, Bambang added.<\/p>\n
\"It's true that the Pakistanis attacked Rauf, but it's all
\nbecause of his own actions,\" Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Based on the assault incident, Rauf intended to lodge a formal
\ncharge, through the nearby police station, against the two
\ntourists, for having beaten him up, he said.<\/p>\n
But instead, Bambang said, Rauf allegedly placed several grams
\nof heroin in the Pakistani tourists' bag, as an act of revenge.<\/p>\n
Rauf then reported the assault incident, along with his find
\nof heroin in their bag, to Central Jakarta police headquarters.<\/p>\n
A number of anti-drug detectives went to the tourists' rooms
\nand found several grams of heroin, as well as other illegal
\ndrugs, in their bags, Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Being foreigners, the two were escorted to city police
\nheadquarters for further questioning, during which both
\nPakistanis refused to accept the report by Rauf.<\/p>\n
\"One of them said that he has to take Valium, under orders
\nfrom his doctor,\" Bambang said.<\/p>\n
During questioning, Muhammad and Usman swore that they have
\nnothing to do with either the heroin, or the other drugs,
\nclaiming that Rauf entrapped them, he said.<\/p>\n
Based on the information given by the tourist, city police
\ndetectives returned to the scene of the crime to investigate
\nfurther, which let them to the preliminary conclusion that Rauf
\nhad allegedly tried to frame them. (bsr)<\/p>",
