Man jailed for profane theft<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta District Court sentenced an
\nunemployed man yesterday to eight months in jail for stealing Rp
\n348,000 (US$96) from a mosque charity box.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Paimin Martodiredjo said the defendant,
\nSyarief Hidayat, 28, stole the money from Al-Makmur Mosque on Jl.
\nKHM Mansur in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Aug. 29.<\/p>\n
Paimin said the defendant climbed onto the mosque's roof and
\nwaited for everyone to leave for the night before climbing down
\nagain.<\/p>\n
Syarief opened the charity box with a screw driver, took the
\nmoney and put it in a plastic bag before closing the lid and
\nreturning the box to its place, he said.<\/p>\n
But a resident, identified as Zainudin, had come to say his
\nmidnight prayer at the mosque and saw the defendant holding the
\nbox.<\/p>\n
Paimin said Zainudin became suspicious and notified other
\nresidents because he did not believe the defendant's explanation
\nthat he was repairing the box.<\/p>\n
Residents caught the defendant and found the money in the
\nplastic bag, he said.<\/p>\n
While in police custody, Syarief admitted that he had stolen
\nmoney from the mosque three times, the judge said.<\/p>\n
"How dare you steal money from a holy place. You planned these
\nthefts."<\/p>\n
