Man burned alive for chicken theft<\/p>\n
CILACAP, East Java (JP): A 50-year-old Mluwung villager in
\nWanareja district, Cilacap regency, was burned to death in the
\nwee hours of Tuesday after being accused of stealing a rooster
\nfrom a local resident.<\/p>\n
The killing of Sumardi by people from the neighboring area of
\nPadang Jaya village in Majenang district brings the death toll of
\nstreet justice victims in Cilacap regency to 17 so far this year.<\/p>\n
According to Sr. Supt. Carel Risakotta, chief of the Banyumas
\nregion, which also supervises the regency, the incident was
\ntriggered by a rumor that Sumardi had stolen a chicken from the
\nhouse of a Padang Jaya resident.<\/p>\n
\"Based on the story, the (Padang Jaya) people were enraged and
\nrushed to find Sumardi's home.<\/p>\n
\"Upon finding his house, Sumardi was then beaten and dragged
\nout to a (soccer) field,\" officer Carel said.<\/p>\n
Two witnesses, Edi, a staffer of the local administration
\noffice, and Sutrisno, a resident, told police officers that the
\ncrowd later tied the helpless Sumardi to a pole, around which
\nwood doused with gasoline had been piled.<\/p>\n
\"The victim was then burned alive. No one was willing to help
\nhim,\" one of the witnesses said.<\/p>\n
Officer Carel said his office was investigating the case and
\nvowed to arrest those involved in the crime and bring them to the
\ncourt.<\/p>\n
\"We're still tracing the ringleader of the Padang Jaya case,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Carel did not explain whether or not Sumardi was the real
\nculprit in the chicken theft.<\/p>\n
Like in many other big cities and towns across the country,
\npeople have resorted to taking the law into their own hands
\nrather then hand suspected criminals over to the police as
\nrequired by law.<\/p>\n
Besides the 17 dead victims, street justice in Cilacap regency
\nhas also left 17 other suspects wounded by mobs. (01\/45)<\/p>",
