Man arrested for inciting people to acts of destruction<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Trisakti University students and residents along
\nJl. Pulo Mas Selatan in East Jakarta apprehended a man for
\nattempting to incite people to commit destructive acts.<\/p>\n
Chief of campus security D. Gultom announced on Monday that
\nthe man, who identified himself as Richard Dewilmaar Simatupang,
\nwas arrested on Friday for repeatedly shouting, \"Burn mosques,
\nburn churches, but don't burn Jesus,\" in front of the campus.<\/p>\n
\"The local residents call him a provocateur, but we don't want
\nto call him that. We realize that we have to be careful now as
\nmany people can easily be incited after similar agitation. We
\ndon't want any bloody riots and brawls occurring here just
\nbecause of such irresponsible shouts,\" Gultom said.<\/p>\n
Richard, estimated to be around 30, carried a brown cloth bag
\nfull of papers, books and five cassettes.<\/p>\n
\"I don't really remember what the titles of the books were,
\nbut the papers mentioned politics and Sukarno,\" Gultom said,
\nreferring to first president Sukarno.<\/p>\n
Richard, who apparently hails from Sumatra, told campus
\nsecurity guards that he dropped out of the University of
\nPembangunan Nasional (UPN).<\/p>\n
\"He claims he lives in Jakarta in the Purna Bakti housing
\ncomplex in Pondok Labu, near the UPN campus,\" Gultom said.<\/p>\n
Gultom said that Richard suddenly appeared on the street at
\nabout 3 p.m. on Friday and joined people who were sitting in
\nfront of food stalls along the street.<\/p>\n
\"He (Richard) then preached to people, who first thought he
\nwas crazy, about his deep disappointment with the condition of
\nreligion in the country,\" Gultom said.<\/p>\n
After stopping for two to five minutes, he then left, urging
\npeople to burn churches and other property, Gultom said.<\/p>\n
People became disturbed by Richard's actions and the students
\ntook the initiative to take Richard to the campus to avoid an
\nugly scene.<\/p>\n
Richard was then sent to East Jakarta Police station by the
\nstudents after the Commission on Violence and Missing Persons
\n(Kontras) refused to have anything to do with the man.<\/p>\n
Separately, Jakarta Police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman
\nconfirmed the citizens' arrest and said that the man was now in
\ncity police custody for further investigation.<\/p>\n
\"He declined to speak to police and we've already sought
\npsychological counseling, but the results aren't ready yet,\" he
\nannounced after a routine commanders meeting at police
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n
His lack of response to simple questions, such as about his
\nidentity and address, has led the police to believe that the man
