Maluku mayhem continues<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku (JP): A clash between two villages on Lease
\nIsland in the Saparua district of Central Maluku broke out Friday
\nmorning resulting in the destruction of some 160 homes.<\/p>\n
Witnesses claimed that as many as five people may have died
\nand seven others injured in the clash, however no official
\nconfirmation could be obtained.<\/p>\n
Rev. P.G. Manopo, secretary at the Klasis Protestant Church on
\nLease Island, said the clash occurred between residents of Noloth
\nand Iha villages.<\/p>\n
He claimed the violence, which seemed to have been provoked
\ndue to religious reasons, was probably triggered by a previous
\nunresolved clash in neighboring Siri Sori village on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"What makes it so tragic is that the attack broke out just 10
\nminutes after visiting Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen. Firman Gani
\nand his entourage left the village,\" Manopo added.<\/p>\n
Firman Gani had arrived earlier Friday morning to monitor the
\nsecurity condition in several villages in the area which had been
\nthe scene of several clashes.<\/p>\n
Lease Island is located east of Ambon Island.<\/p>\n
Separately, a staff at the local civil emergency post in Ambon
\nJohn Tomasowa, confirmed the incident and said that five had
\ndied.<\/p>\n
He said the sporadic but unrelenting violence in the province
\nhas paralyzed riot-torn Ambon city which had earlier shown signs
