Malnutrition in S. Kalimantan<\/p>\n
BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Twenty-six undernourished
\nbabies in South Kalimantan have died this year and 59 others are
\ncurrently receiving treatment, Antara reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n
South Kalimantan administration spokesman Kamarul Hidayat said
\nthere were also at least 4,482 children under the age of five who
\nneeded immediate care for undernourishment.<\/p>\n
He said that since February, 72 incidents of malnutrition were
\nfound in the provincial capital of Banjarmasin.<\/p>\n
Kamarul also said that of 15 cases of malnutrition reported in
\nJune, eight were treated at the hospital while the rest were
\ntreated in their homes.<\/p>\n
He said the administration was distributing food packages
\ncontaining rice, instant noodles, eggs and powdered milk to help
\nfight malnutrition.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Antara reported from Riau's provincial capital of
\nPekanbaru that Rp 17 billion would be allocated by the central
\ngovernment to help fight undernourishment among infants in the
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
According to administration data, there are some 27,400
\nmalnourished children under the age of five in Riau.<\/p>\n
Administration secretary Tengku Lukman Jaafar said this figure
\ncould rise due to more intensive monitoring being carried out in
\ncooperation with non-governmental organizations.(edt)<\/p>",
