        "content": "<p>Malaysia's satellite launched<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad<br>\nyesterday hailed the successful launch of the country's first<br>\ncommunications satellite as a major step in the country's bid to<br>\nattain developed status.<\/p>\n<p>\"The launch is another important stride in our plan to achieve<br>\nindustrialized status by 2020,\" Mahathir said after witnessing<br>\nthe launch over a live television broadcast here.<\/p>\n<p>He said the satellite, owned by telecommunications firm<br>\nBinariang, would give Malaysia more censorship control over<br>\nmaterial beamed into the country, although he conceded \"outright<br>\ncontrol is very difficult.\"<\/p>\n<p>The Malaysia East Asia Satellite-1 (MEASAT-1), together with<br>\nthe PANAMSAT-3R satellite owned by US firm PanAmSat, was deployed<br>\nby an Ariane rocket which blasted off from Korou, French Guiana<br>\nat 2310 GMT Friday.<\/p>",
