Malaysians warned about orphans<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Malaysians hoping to adopt children were urged by
\nauthorities on Wednesday to beware of traffickers, who might try
\nto sell youngsters left orphaned after neighboring Indonesia's
\nquake-and-tsunami disaster.<\/p>\n
The government has no evidence so far that children from
\nSumatra island have been smuggled illegally into Malaysia over
\nthe past week, but people should use official channels if they
\nwant to adopt children, said Malaysian Immigration Department
\nEnforcement Director Ishak Mohamed.<\/p>\n
\"Those hoping to adopt should be cautious to prevent various
\nproblems from surfacing,\" Ishak was quoted as saying by the
\nnational news agency, Bernama.<\/p>\n
His comments come amid concerns by child welfare groups such
\nas UNICEF, that child-trafficking gangs, which are well-
\nentrenched in Indonesia are spiriting orphaned children into
\nforced labor or sexual slavery in richer neighboring countries
\nsuch as Malaysia and Singapore. -- AP<\/p>",
