Malaysians criticize Indonesian minister<\/p>\n

An employers group criticized a recent allegation by a Jakarta
\nminister that Malaysian businessmen were behind the flood of
\nIndonesian illegals, a report said Saturday.<\/p>\n
Shamsuddin Bardan, executive director of the Federation of
\nMalaysian Employers said employers prefer cheap labor. \"But
\nMalaysian employers definitely have never had preference for
\ncheap illegal employers,\" he was quoted as saying by The Sun
\nnewspaper.<\/p>\n
Employers were aware of the stiff penalties for hiring illegal
\nworkers, he said. Those caught for employing illegals can be
\nfined up to 5,000 ringgit (1,316 dollars) or jailed up to five
\nyears.<\/p>\n
Shamsuddin said Indonesia should ensure its workers do not
\nleave its shores illegally.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Manpower Minister Jacob Nuwa Wea Thursday said
\nunscrupulous Malaysian businessmen were partly to blame for the
\nthousands of Indonesian illegal immigrants working in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Malaysian bosses appeared to prefer illegal workers because
\nthey could be paid less than legal ones, he said.<\/p>\n
\"And if the Malaysian businesses ran into trouble with these
\nworkers, particularly with regard to wages, they usually will
\nreport to the police that some illegal workers are serving their
\ncompanies,\" he alleged.<\/p>\n
Hamdan Adnan, president of the Federation of Malaysian
\nConsumers Association said Nuwa Wea's comment was \"undiplomatic.\"<\/p>\n
\"The fact is there is job scarcity in Indonesia, and that
\nexplains why they are willing to risk their lives to come to
\nMalaysia.<\/p>",
