Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has sent a letter\nto Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to request assistance regarding\nFelda\u2019s investment in PT Eagle High Plantations Tbk (BWPT), which has\nthe potential to cause losses of up to billions of ringgit.<\/p>\n
In the letter, Anwar stated that the potential financial loss borne\nby Felda could reach RM2.5 billion, or approximately Rp10.75 trillion,\nassuming an exchange rate of Rp4,300 per ringgit.<\/p>\n
The losses are said to have stemmed from decisions made by Felda\u2019s\nprevious management. Meanwhile, the funds that could still potentially\nbe recovered are estimated at only around RM200 million.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis investment is currently undergoing legal proceedings in\nIndonesia. I have written a letter to President Prabowo to ask him to\nreview this matter,\u201d Anwar was quoted as saying by Detik.com on Tuesday\n(25\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
As is known, Felda is a Malaysian government agency that manages\nagricultural land development, primarily to support the welfare of rural\ncommunities.<\/p>\n
In December 2016, Felda, through FIC Properties Sdn Bhd, purchased\nshares in EHP in Indonesia worth US$505.4 million. The purchase price\ndrew widespread criticism as it was deemed too high compared to the\nmarket value and the subsequent share price.<\/p>\n
Anwar said that disclosing the financial crisis figures was intended\nto ensure that all levels of Felda\u2019s management understand the scale of\nthe challenges faced in the recovery effort.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I want to emphasise is that all Felda managers must truly\nunderstand this problem. They must not be disheartened, but must realise\nthat these problems must be resolved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Regarding broader recovery efforts, Anwar confirmed that the\ngovernment is committed to accelerating basic welfare projects without\nhaving to wait for next year\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n
