The drug smuggling case involving a Malaysian Airlines pilot\ncontinues to reveal new facts. In addition to being suspected of acting\nas a courier for methamphetamine and ecstasy, the suspect Mohd Saufi bin\nOthman (39) was also found to be carrying a bottle of urine, allegedly\nprepared to deceive drug tests.<\/p>\n
Mohd Saufi was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after\ncustoms officers became suspicious of his luggage during an X-ray\ninspection at Terminal 3 International Arrivals on Tuesday (28\/7) at\naround 23.30 local time. The suspicion led to an examination of the\nsuitcase and its owner in the customs inspection room.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficers noticed a suspicious suitcase after it was collected by its\nowner, one Mohd Saufi bin Othman, a pilot with a foreign airline,\u201d said\nthe Director of Narcotics Crime at the National Police Criminal\nInvestigation Department (Bareskrim), Brigadier General Eko Hadi\nSantoso, on Thursday (30\/7).<\/p>\n
Upon inspection, officers found 14 large packets and one small packet\nof methamphetamine inside the suitcase. The discovery was then reported\nto the Narcotics Crime Directorate of Bareskrim for further\nhandling.<\/p>\n
During questioning, Mohd Saufi, who has now been named a suspect,\nadmitted that he had been ordered by someone to bring methamphetamine to\nJakarta for a payment of RM50,000.<\/p>\n
Further investigation revealed that the suspect had been carrying a\nsmall bottle of urine. According to Satria Yudhatama, customs spokesman\nat Soekarno-Hatta, the bottle was allegedly prepared as a precaution in\ncase a drug test was carried out at any time.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on information from the surveillance unit, a bottle containing\nurine was indeed found. It was a precaution in case a urine test was\nconducted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, the bottle was not used when officers carried out a\nurine test on the suspect. The bottle was found stored inside Mohd\nSaufi\u2019s bag.<\/p>\n
\u201cInside the bag of the suspect, pilot MSO, a small bottle containing\na yellow liquid was found, which turned out to be urine. According to\nhis confession, the bottle contained \u2018clean\u2019 urine before he consumed\nnarcotics. So, if there were a sudden urine test by the airline or\naviation authorities, he would use the contents of the bottle,\u201d he\nexplained.<\/p>\n
The results of the urine test conducted by officers showed that Mohd\nSaufi was positive for three types of narcotics: methamphetamine,\necstasy and cocaine.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe urine test results showed he was positive for methamphetamine,\necstasy and cocaine. So he was using at the time of the flight,\u201d said\nthe Head of Soekarno-Hatta Customs, Hengky Tomuan Parlindungan\nAritonang, to reporters on Sunday (2\/8).<\/p>\n
The findings indicate that the suspect was under the influence of\nnarcotics whilst carrying out his duty of flying the aircraft.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, at the time of the flight, he was using (drugs),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines stated that it respects the ongoing\nlegal process in Indonesia and will cooperate with the investigation\nbeing conducted by local authorities.<\/p>\n
\u201cMalaysia Airlines wishes to reaffirm that it does not tolerate any\nform of violation and is currently conducting an internal review of the\nmatter,\u201d the airline said, as reported by Free Malaysia Today on Friday\n(31\/7).<\/p>\n
