Malaysian oil plant blast injures 12 people<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Twelve people, including four employees,
\nwere injured when a gas plant belonging to oil giant Shell
\nexploded in the town of Bintulu late Thursday night, a company
\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Ten people have been discharged but two are still in hospital
\nfor observation,\" Masari Allision, Shell's local human resources
\nsenior manager, told AFP.<\/p>\n
He said the two had cuts but no burns.
\nThe explosion at the plant in Sarawak, East Malaysia, occurred at
\n10:50 p.m. (9:50 a.m. Jakarta time).<\/p>\n
Masari said a fire at the plant involving two tanks with gas
\noil and kerosene was still burning, but had been brought under
\ncontrol by the local fire department with help from other oil
\nplants nearby.<\/p>\n
\"About 150 firefighters, including those from Shell, are
\nfighting the blaze,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Firemen are spraying foam on the two tanks to control the
\nfire while other nearby tanks are being cooled to prevent any
\nexplosion.\"<\/p>\n
Shell in a statement earlier said four employees of Shell
\nMiddle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) were injured, while eight
\nmembers of the public in an industrial and military complex
\noutside the plant had sought treatment.<\/p>\n
An investigation is underway into the cause of the explosion,
\nShell added.<\/p>",
