Malaysian leader to visit Thailand<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will be
\nmaking an official visit to Thailand on Jan. 16 as part of a
\nregional familiarization trip and to boost bilateral ties, the
\ngovernment announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Abdullah, who took over from veteran leader Mahathir Mohamad
\non Oct. 31, will hold talks with his counterpart Thaksin
\nShinawatra, the foreign ministry said in a statement to the
\nBernama news agency.<\/p>\n
He is also due to have an audience with the King Bhumibol
\nAdulyadej, it said.<\/p>\n
The trip will provide Abdullah with the opportunity to discuss
\nbilateral issues of mutual concern with Thaksin, the ministry
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Abdullah's visit to Thailand is part of a tour of Association
\nof Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries for newly installed
\nregional leaders.<\/p>\n
The premier has already visited Singapore, Brunei and

THAILAND: Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra urged his
\ncountrymen on Thursday to eat more shrimp to make up for a severe
\nshortage of chickens brought on by diseases at poultry farms.<\/p>\n
\"This will have a double benefit,\" Thaksin told reporters at
\nGovernment House, easing the chicken shortage while benefiting
\nshrimp farmers who have been hit by a major supply glut.<\/p>\n
Thaksin reiterated his government's insistence that the
\nepidemics that have wiped out hundreds of thousands of chickens
\nin Thailand were not related to the bird flu outbreak that has
\nhit several other Asian nations.<\/p>\n
He backed up claims by the Agriculture Ministry that the
\ndisease hitting the Thai poultry farms was a seasonal type of
\nchicken cholera and windpipe infection that poses no danger to
\npeoples' health.<\/p>\n
Thaksin blamed unnamed political opponents for building up the
