Malaysian govt IT plan blasted<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's opposition party on Friday
\ncriticized a scheme to sell computers through the post office and
\npressed the government to abolish the controversial program.<\/p>\n
Lim Kit Siang, chairman of the Chinese dominated Democratic
\nAction Party (DAP), said the post office should instead raise the
\nlow Internet penetration rate in the country.<\/p>\n
\"The post office should play a key role in a national strategy
\nfor community-based access to IT (information technology) to
\nraise the Internet penetration rate instead of being a monopoly
\nto sell computers under the EPF scheme,\" he said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Workers, who must contribute 11 percent of their earnings to
\nthe Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), are allowed to withdraw some
\nof the money before retirement age for house or computer
\npurchases.<\/p>\n
The government, worried that many people were cheating on the
\nscheme and withdrawing cash for other purposes, last month
\ndecreed that all computer purchases using EPF money must be made
\nthrough Pos Malaysia.<\/p>",
