        "content": "<p>Malaysian Chinese save old school<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Calling it a triumph, ethnic Chinese<br>\nparents and rights activists on Wednesday welcomed the<br>\ngovernment's offer to allow them to return to a condemned school<br>\nthat has become a symbol of the Malaysian minority's struggle to<br>\ndefend its culture.<\/p>\n<p>After days of protests by die-hard parents and pupils who<br>\nrefused to leave the Damansara National Chinese School for a new<br>\nfacility, Education Minister Musa Mohamad relented and said that<br>\nthe school can stay open if only some of the 1,500 students<br>\nrefuse to transfer within a week.<\/p>\n<p>His statement, issued late Tuesday after a three-hour<br>\nconference with the board of governors, surprised many parents<br>\nand opposition leaders who were preparing for a prolonged legal<br>\nbattle against the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have been angry with nearly 100 Damansara students<br>\nwho stubbornly defied a government order to abandon their school,<br>\nwhich the officials say is plagued by noise and air pollution and<br>\ndangerously perched on a slope beside a busy highway.<\/p>",
