Malaysia to launch tsunami alert system<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Malaysia will launch a tsunami early-warning system
\non Dec. 26, the first anniversary of last year's deadly
\nearthquake-and-tsunami disaster, news reports said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Seismic detection buoys will be placed in waters near
\nIndonesia's Sumatra island, which is prone to earthquakes that
\ncould trigger tsunamis, said Malaysian Science Minister Jamaludin
\nJarjis.<\/p>\n
\"The network of deep ocean buoys and tidal gauges will monitor
\nsea level changes,\" Jamaludin was quoted as saying by the New
\nSunday Times newspaper.<\/p>\n
Malaysia will coordinate the network with international
\ncenters such as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the Japan
\nMeteorological Agency, Jamaludin added.<\/p>\n
The system is expected to give Malaysians living on the
\ncoastline about one hour's warning before a tsunami strikes, the
\nreport said.<\/p>\n
Last year's tsunami killed 68 Malaysians, mostly villagers who
\nlived in coastal areas of northwestern peninsular Malaysia, which
\nis separated from Sumatra by the narrow Malacca Strait. -- DPA<\/p>",
