        "content": "<p>Malaysia to arrest illegal immigrants<\/p>\n<p>MALAYSIA: More than half a million civilian volunteers will be<br>\ngiven the power to arrest illegal immigrants next year, local<br>\nmedia reported on Friday, despite fears that such a move would<br>\nencourage vigilantism and undermine the law.<\/p>\n<p>Home Minister Azmi Khalid said that from January onward some<br>\n560,000 members of two neighborhood security watch organizations<br>\nwould help police and immigration officials round up illegal<br>\nforeign workers, the national news agency Bernama reported.<\/p>\n<p>The immigrants, mostly from neighboring Indonesia and other<br>\nparts of Asia, had ignored an earlier government amnesty offer to<br>\nleave Malaysia without punishment, Bernama said.<\/p>\n<p>The government has said illegal immigrants detained from the<br>\nbeginning of 2005 risk being whipped with a rattan cane, fined<br>\nand jailed before being deported.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Human Rights Watch warned that Malaysia's<br>\nproposed deportation of hundreds of thousands of illegal<br>\nimmigrants could spark human rights abuses and harm legitimate<br>\nrefugees and victims of human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>The New York-based group also urged Malaysia to scrap its plan<br>\nto enlist civilian volunteers for immigration raids because it<br>\nwould encourage vigilantism and undermine the rule of law. --AP<\/p>",
