Malaysia sets ethics for receiving gifts<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The Malaysian government, waging a battle
\nagainst corruption in official ranks, is to set out in writing
\nthe types of gifts politicians and top officials can keep,
\nreports said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The move was to ensure that gifts received by politicians
\nwould not be misconstrued as bribery attempts, Prime Minister
\nMahathir Mohamad said after a meeting with leaders of the ruling
\n14-member National Front coalition.<\/p>\n
"These souvenirs are meant only as tokens but sometimes they
\ncost thousands (of ringgit). We will decide whether they can
\naccept the gifts, or surrender them to the finance ministry," he
\nwas quoted as saying in The Star daily.<\/p>\n
Under a code of ethics, the recipients would have the choice
\nof buying the gift back from the government or allowing the
\nministry to keep it, Mahathir said.<\/p>\n
"However, if they are treated to a meal, they can accept it.
\nThey can also accept fruits, unless, of course, the fruits are
\nmade of gold." The premier said he received many gifts everyday
\nbut items such as cars, have all been handed to the government.<\/p>",
