Malaysia, Indonesia to curb transborder crime<\/p>\n

Malaysian police pledged on Wednesday to step up efforts with
\nIndonesia to battle transborder crime and tame syndicates
\noperating at their joint border after scoring some \"major
\nsuccesses\".<\/p>\n
Joint border operations in Sabah and Sarawak states on Borneo
\nisland will focus on tackling illegal logging and smuggling of
\nfirearms, said Internal Security and Public Order assistant
\ndirector Kamalul Azmi Darus.<\/p>\n
Joint patrols by marine police in the busy Straits of Malacca
\nwill focus on closing illegal entry points used by immigrants and
\nsmugglers of contraband, he was quoted as saying by the official
\nBernama news agency.<\/p>\n
\"Lately, we had scored some major successes in crippling
\nseveral syndicates through such cooperation especially with the
\nMalaysian police's effort in reducing the number of vehicles
\nbeing smuggled into Indonesia,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He was speaking after opening a four-day joint operation
\nmeeting here between Malaysian and Indonesian police.<\/p>\n
Kamalul said the meeting would discuss how enforcement
\nagencies in both countries could be more effective in their
\noperations against syndicates based near key border towns and
\ncoastal areas.<\/p>\n
They will also exchange intelligence and seek to improve links
\nby appointing more officers at border towns and ports, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Crackdowns on illegal bases were not much effective mainly
\ndue to the location of the bases and our efforts in trailing them
\nare made much more difficult whenever they cross the common
\nborder,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Such problems could be minimized if enforcement agencies agree
\non a system to alert each other, or close all escape routes, he
\nadded.<\/p>",
