KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia said yesterday four former
\nfollowers of a banned Islamic sect, Al-Arqam, had been imprisoned
\nfor trying to revive the movement.<\/p>\n
The four will be held under the powerful Internal Security Act
\n(ISA) for at least two years, Bernama news agency reported.<\/p>\n
Al-Arqam was founded in 1968 by leader Ashaari Muhammad and
\ncrushed by the authorities in 1994 when Malaysia's Moslem clergy
\nruled its teachings to be in conflict with Islam.<\/p>\n
The four people imprisoned were identified as Hashim Ahmad,
\n42; Haji Ahmad Salim Omar, 49; Hasyim Jaafar, 40; and Pahrol Mohd
\nGoui, 36, a director of a publishing firm.<\/p>\n
After the 1994 ban, Ashaari and seven leaders were detained
\nunder the ISA and in October that year Ashaari confessed on
\nnational television to straying from Islamic teachings and
\nmisleading his followers.<\/p>\n

PHNOM PENH (Reuter): Cambodia's Foreign Minister Ung Huot
\nflies to the Philippines today for an official visit aimed at
\nstrengthening bilateral ties and cooperation.<\/p>\n
Ung Huot said yesterday he was not scheduled to sign any
\nagreements but would hold talks with President Fidel Ramos and
\nother top officials and \"meet the business people to talk about
\ninvestment opportunities (in Cambodia)\".<\/p>\n
The minister will also visit the Manila headquarters of the
\nInternational Rice Research Institute, which operates in
\nCambodia. He said the goodwill visit was aimed at \"strengthening
\nrelations. He will return home on Thursday having completed his
\nround of goodwill visits to all the seven members of ASEAN.<\/p>\n

SINGAPORE (UPI): Singapore Airlines plans to oppose a U.S. ban
\nagainst in-flight gambling on international carriers serving the
\nUnited States, an airline spokesman said Monday.<\/p>\n
Singapore Airlines has joined a coalition of international air
\ncarriers that plan to contest the U.S. ban, which opponents say
\ncould lead to losses of millions of dollars in revenue.<\/p>\n
The coalition is more concerned with U.S. efforts to impose
\nthe ban on other countries' airlines than it is with promoting
\ngambling, Singapore Airlines spokesman Rick Clements said.<\/p>\n
\"We're just against the principle of the United States trying
\nto impose its own national laws extraterritorially,\" Clements
\nsaid. Some coalition members also are concerned about U.S.
\nattempts to ban in-flight smoking, he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, Singapore Airlines, along with several
\nother carriers, announced plans to launch electronic gambling as
\npart of an expansion of its entertainment and multimedia
\nservices.<\/p>\n

MANILA (DPA): The government has dismissed 57 corrupt officers
\nfrom the Philippine National Police (PNP), including seven
\nbelieved to be responsible for the kidnapping and slaying of two
\nbusinessmen, a top official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The dismissals were \"in line with our relentless campaign to
\nweed out scallywags in the PNP,\" Interior and Local Government
\nSecretary Robert Barbers said.<\/p>\n
In addition to the seven linked to the kidnapping-murder
\nearlier this year, other policemen were dismissed because of
\ncases filed against them for robbery, extortion, assault, drug
\ntrafficking, homicide, being absent without leave and other minor
\noffenses.<\/p>\n
Five of the dismissed police officers have appealed their
\ncases to the National Police Commission. Barbers said the
\ngovernment has dismissed more than 200 policemen for various
\ncriminal and administrative offenses since he assumed office in
\nApril.<\/p>\n

HANOI (DPA): Law enforcement officers in Tien Giang province
\nin southern Vietnam have arrested nine people on \"baby trade\"
\ncharges, official media reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
The suspects allegedly bought 21 new-born babies from poor
\nfamilies in the Mekong delta, paying an average of some five
\nmillion dongs (US$450) per infant, the Quan Doi Nhan Dan
\n(People's Army) newspaper reported.<\/p>\n
The offenders reportedly resold 15 babies to unspecified
\nforeigners for adoption, and made a profit of several thousand
\ndollars profit in each particular case.<\/p>\n
The police department of Tien Giang province declined to
\ndisclose, whether the babies have been smuggled out of the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
The alleged ring-leader, 41-year-old Tran Huu Phuoc, worked as
\njudicial advisor for the Women's union of Ho Chi Minh City, and
\nwas able to provide assistance in adoption process.

Rabuka, who arrived on Sunday for a three-day official visit
\naccompanied by his wife, is leading an 18-member entourage to
\nenhance trade and economic relations between Malaysia and the
\nPacific republic.<\/p>\n
He is scheduled to have an audience with Malaysia's King
\nTuanku Ja'afar Abdul Rahman later yesterday before talks with
