Malaysia gets crafty<\/p>\n

Malaysia is among the nations in the world with \"crafty\"
\nmoves, as shown in the border dispute with Indonesia over the
\nownership of Sipadan and Ligitan islands. Malaysia built resorts
\non the islands even before the dispute was settled, without
\nresponding to Indonesia's protests.<\/p>\n
This Malaysian activity gave the International Court of
\nJustice reason to grant Malaysia's claim over the two islands.
\nThis victory was also thanks to Malaysia's sophisticated
\ninternational lobbying.<\/p>\n
However, its actual target was certainly the resource-rich
\nwaters in the Ambalat offshore block owned by Indonesia. Malaysia
\nwas aware that Indonesia would strongly react to the concession
\nit gave to the Shell oil company, which was already in the
\nMalaysian scenario.<\/p>\n
This maneuver apparently was made with the aim of
\nstrengthening Malaysia's bargaining position in bilateral
\nnegotiations. Therefore, the Indonesian government should watch
\nout for any traps in the Malaysian scenario.<\/p>\n
The government should adhere to the principle that not an inch
\nof territory will be illegitimately given up to other countries.
\nNo political compromise that will harm the interests of future
\ngenerations should ever be made.<\/p>\n
