Malaysia focuses on poverty<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim has
\npromised to take a middle line on taxes in his October budget, as
\nhe was urged yesterday to provide incentives for small and medium
\nsize businesses.<\/p>\n
Anwar, who is also deputy prime minister, said Malaysia will
\nadopt a moderate path to promote economic growth and encourage
\nforeign investment but will not neglect the poor.<\/p>\n
\"Our policies have been consistent. We take the middle path.
\nWe have opted for this,\" he said in an address Saturday at
\ncelebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Unilever Malaysia
\nHoldings.<\/p>\n
He said that when preparing his October budget he had to
\ndecide whether to be \"the Sheriff of Nottingham (to tax the poor)
\nor to be Robin Hood (to tax the rich). Malaysia will adopt a
\npolicy somewhere in-between.\"<\/p>\n
R.V. Navaratnam, corporate advisor to Malaysian construction
\nand development giant the Sungeiway group, told AFP the October
\nbudget could spell out tax incentives for the creation and
\ndevelopment of small and medium size businesses.<\/p>\n
The government may also work on an expenditure program to
\nrehabilitate small and rural towns to reduce urban migration, he
\nsaid.<\/p>",
