Malaysia deports shipload Indonesian illegal workers<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): Malaysia deported 303 illegal Indonesian
\nimmigrants yesterday on board a ferry to Dumai, Sumatra, an
\nImmigration Department spokesman said.<\/p>\n
The 162 men, 121 women and 20 children, aged between one and
\n40 years, were required to pay their own fares of up 60 ringgit
\n(US$16) for the trip.<\/p>\n
The illegals had been rounded up throughout the state of
\nMalacca recently and were detained at a camp for about two weeks,
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
In another development, police in an ongoing operation to
\nflush out illegal immigrants, detained a total of 267 illegal in
\ntwo separate operations, police said.<\/p>\n
In a first operation, police seized forged passports and
\ntravel documents and rounded up 115 illegal immigrants in the
\ncentral state of Selangor, he said.<\/p>\n
Among those detained 90 were Indonesians, 12 Bangladeshis, six
\nThais, six Indians and a Taiwanese. All were unable to produce
\nvalid travel documents, police added.<\/p>\n
In a similar operation, another 152 illegal immigrants were
\nrounded up in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, they said. They
\ncomprised 76 Indonesians, 40 Bangladeshis, nine Burmese, seven
\nIndians, five Iranians and a Pakistani.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, six Thais, including a woman were detained while
\nattempting to enter Malaysia illegally in a special modified van,
\nthe southern state of Johor Immigration Director Tasmin Othman
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The drama of their entry started when the van which arrived
\nfrom Singapore sped away at the checkpoint and smashed into the
\nbarricades, he said.<\/p>\n
Tasmin said after the incident, immigration officers heard
\nknocking from inside the vehicle, and found six Thais illegal
\nimmigrants, aged between 21 and 43 years, hiding in a special
\ncompartment in the van's undercarriage that had been modified.<\/p>\n
Indonesia had assured Malaysia that it would take whatever
\nmeasures necessary to stop the inflow of illegal immigrants,
\nMalaysian Defense Minister Syed Hamid Albar said.<\/p>\n
He said the assurance was given by his visiting Indonesian
\ncounterpart Gen. Wiranto. \"We would like to see them stopping
\ntheir people from coming over rather than us having to face the
\nproblem later,\" Syed Hamid said.<\/p>",
