Malaysia cracks down on illegal immigrants<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Malaysia launched a hunt on Thursday for some 50,000
\nillegal immigrants and overstaying foreign tourists, state-run
\nBernama news agency said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The crackdown comes as Malaysian police have come under fire
\nfor allegedly mistreating some visitors from China.<\/p>\n
\"The prime minister has directed that we should trace the
\n50,000 people,\" said Othman Talib, director of internal security
\nand public order with the Federal Police, was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
Those caught in the crackdown would be handed to immigration
\nauthorities and prosecuted, Bernama said. Othman did not reveal
\nthe nationalities thought to make up the 50,000.<\/p>\n
Beijing has lodged a diplomatic protest with Malaysia over
\nalleged humiliation and assault of Chinese women in police
\ncustody. Malaysia is investigating the complaints.<\/p>\n
Last week, newspapers splashed a story about a mobile-phone
\nvideo clip that purportedly showed a a woman constable ordering a
\nyoung Chinese woman to strip and squat naked in a police station.<\/p>\n
Malaysia was a major destination for Chinese tourists until
\nthis year, when there has been a marked drop in arrivals. --
