Kuala Lumpur \u2014 A ceremony was held on Monday, 16 March at Gombak\nstation on the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), marking an important\nmilestone for Malaysia\u2019s ECRL as rail installation was completed on the\nKota Bharu-Gombak section of the megaproject railway being undertaken by\nChina Communications Construction Company (CCCC).<\/p>\n
Speaking at the event, Malaysia\u2019s Second Minister of Finance Amir\nHamzah Azizan stated that the 519-kilometre stretch was completed ahead\nof schedule, highlighting the efficient synergy and close cooperation\nbetween Malaysia and China.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe railway line spanning over 600 kilometres is not only a\nstrategic national asset but also a symbol of close cooperation between\nour two nations,\u201d said Malaysian Government Principal Secretary Shamsul\nAzri Abu Bakar, adding that the railway will provide the public with a\nmore modern, efficient, and safe travel experience whilst transforming\nMalaysia\u2019s transport system.<\/p>\n
With the completion of rail installation for the Kota Bharu-Gombak\nsection, electric multiple unit (EMU) trains will soon undergo\nunobstructed trial runs covering 8,000 kilometres, marking an important\nstep towards commercial operation, said Deng Bo, Executive Director of\nCCC-ECRL.<\/p>\n
The ECRL, a flagship project under China-Malaysia Belt and Road\nInitiative cooperation, spans over 600 kilometres in total. The first\nphase, stretching from Kota Bharu to Gombak, is scheduled to commence\noperations in January 2027.
