        "content": "<p>Malaysia bans sugar exports<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia has frozen the export of sugar<br>\nindefinitely after a domestic shortage of the commodity created<br>\nby profiteers, officials said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The ban was to deal with \"irresponsible\" wholesalers who had<br>\nrefused to distribute the produce of the country's four sugar<br>\nmillers unless they made higher profits from the government-<br>\ncontrolled commodity, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\"In some cases, the wholesalers provided supplies at higher<br>\ncosts, making it difficult for retailers to sell sugar at the<br>\ngovernment-fixed price,\" said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs<br>\nMinister Abu Hassan Omar, who ordered the ban.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia exported 250,927 tons of sugar last year, a 44<br>\npercent increase over the 174,296 tons shipped in 1993, officials<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Abu Hassan said he met local sugar producers Malaysian Sugar<br>\nManufacturing Co., Central Sugars Refinery, Kilang Gula Padang<br>\nTerap and Kilang Gula Felda Perlis on Thursday and decided that a<br>\ntemporary export ban was the best way to deal with the artificial<br>\nshortage.<\/p>\n<p>Abu Hassan said checks by his ministry showed there was<br>\nadequate supply of sugar nationwide although some retailers<br>\nhowled they had run out of the item.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will continue making checks on business premises<br>\nthroughout the country to ensure there is no hoarding of sugar,\"<br>\nAbu Hassan said, adding that the export ban would last until<br>\nlocal supply was stabilized.<\/p>\n<p>Economic adviser to the government Daim Zainuddin warned<br>\nsevere action against any party which tried to unilaterally raise<br>\nprices of government-controlled goods.<\/p>",
