        "content": "<p>Malays delay rallies as race row cools<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): A Malay student organization said on<br>\nMonday it had postponed plans for nationwide protest rallies<br>\nafter a Chinese group shelved controversial requests for an end<br>\nto some Malay privileges.<\/p>\n<p>Syed Anuar Syed Mohamad, secretary-general of the Peninsular<br>\nMalay Students Federation, said the decision \"amounts to a<br>\nceasefire in the war of words with the Malaysian Chinese<br>\nOrganizations Election Appeals Committee (Suqiu)...<\/p>\n<p>\"We are also worried that other quarters would take advantage<br>\nof the rallies to organize similar gatherings which may aggravate<br>\nthe situation,\" Bernama news agency quoted him as saying in the<br>\neastern state of Terengganu.<\/p>\n<p>Suqiu said last Friday it agreed to withdraw its request to<br>\nthe government to abolish all distinctions between indigenous<br>\nraces, known as bumiputeras, and others.<\/p>\n<p>The decision came on the eve of a rally by the Malay student<br>\nbody in Terengganu in protest at the Suqiu requests. The<br>\ngathering went ahead last Saturday but changed its theme to focus<br>\non unity.<\/p>",
