Malaria hits Riau's regency<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: Malaria has claimed 31 lives in the last two
\nmonths in Indragiri Hilir regency, Riau province, sparking fear
\namong people in the regency.<\/p>\n
Of the total fatalities, 27 died last month in Belaras village
\nand the other four died this week in Kualaselat and Simbar
\nvillages.<\/p>\n
Besides the deceased, 80 other people in the regency have also
\nreported suffered Malaria.<\/p>\n
Indragiri Hilir regent Rusli Zainal said on Thursday that the
\nregency health office was trying to stop the spread of malaria to
\nother areas.<\/p>\n
"We have sent health teams to the villages hit by malaria. We
\nhave also been spraying the areas with mosquito repellent," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He hoped that people with malaria symptoms would report to the
\nnearest health post. Other areas in Riau are also reportedly
\nprone to malaria attack.<\/p>\n
Malaria symptoms include high fever, headache and vomiting,

BANDUNG, West Java: 10,000 of 35,000 elementary school buildings
\nin West Java are in a damaged state due to their age.<\/p>\n
Head of the West Java office of the Ministry of National
\nEducation Iim Muasliman said on Thursday that it was not unusual
\nto find them seriously damaged, as most had been built in the
\n1970s.<\/p>\n
"We have only a minimal budget to repair school buildings, so
\nwe can only start by renovating 217 elementary school buildings
\nin 14 regencies in West Java," he said.<\/p>\n
He added that the West Java administration had allocated Rp
\n900 million for the repair of 217 damaged school buildings.<\/p>\n
Iim hoped that school committees, which include students'
\nparents, would assist financially in the renovation of damaged

JEMBER, East Java: The Jember Police will start investigating a
\ncomplaint by a local journalist of violence and slander committed
\nby a state prosecutor on June 24.<\/p>\n
"We will follow up the complaint. We shall hold as evidence a
\ntape recorder, as well as question witnesses and the prosecutor,"
\nJember Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Setyo Prihadi said on
\nThursday. He did not indicate the timetable for the prosecution.<\/p>\n
The June 24 incident occurred when the prosecutor refused to
\nanswer the journalist's questions. The attorney even swore and
\nbrushed aside the tape recorder so that it dropped and was

\nMinistry of Culture and Tourism demanded on Thursday the
\nprovincial administration halt the construction of buildings on
\nthe edge of Selaparang Airport.<\/p>\n
"The presence of buildings there will hamper incoming and
\noutgoing airplanes when taking off and landing," head of the West
\nNusa Tenggara Office of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism
\nMahfud Achmad said.<\/p>\n
Construction at the verge of the airport has been going on for
\nthe past few days, although similar projects were stopped in the
\npast due to public objections.<\/p>\n
"If the provincial administration does not stop the
\nconstruction now, it will continue until buildings have been
\nerected," he said, adding that the buildings in question were
\nagainst the provincial administration's plan to expand the
