Major's murder not premeditated: Gen. Banurusman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police Chief Gen. Banurusman
\nAstrosemitro said yesterday that preliminary investigations
\nindicated that last week's murder of a police major had not been
\npremeditated.<\/p>\n
\"On the basis of eyewitnesses' accounts, the incident occurred
\nspontaneously because the suspect was unable to control his
\nemotions,\" he said of the Friday's killing of Maj. Noenang Kohar,
\nchief of the Pademangan police subdistrict in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Banurusman told reporters that investigators were still cross-
\nchecking the accounts provided by eyewitnesses, including drivers
\nof bajaj (small three-wheeled passenger transport vehicles) and
\nbystanders.<\/p>\n
Other police sources said yesterday they were still in the
\ndark about who murdered the former head of the drugs unit of the
\nnarcotics division of the city police crime investigation
\ndirectorate.<\/p>\n
\"The investigation is still going on,\" deputy city police
\nchief Brig. Gen. Hamami Nata said separately yesterday.<\/p>\n
According to City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang
\nPermantoro, police interrogators are still questioning a number
\nof witnesses to collect more detailed information.<\/p>\n
Bambang brushed aside press reports that the suspect was a
\nmember of the Armed Forces (ABRI).<\/p>\n
Maj. Noenang, 38, the newly-appointed head of the Pademangan
\npolice, was fatally stabbed by a passenger of a bajaj on Jl.
\nWisma Jaya, East Jakarta, on his way home from his office at
\napproximately 7 p.m. last Friday.<\/p>\n
On the basis of the scene of the crime, the way in which the
\nsuspect stabbed the officer and the type of the knife used to
\nkill Noenang, several reporters have speculated in the local
\npress that the killing might have been plotted and executed by an
\nABRI member.<\/p>\n
Bambang rejected unconfirmed reports that the police had, in
\nfact, already caught the suspect but that they were keeping it
\nsecret because the man they were holding was a member of ABRI.<\/p>\n
\"How they can come to such a conclusion if the investigation
\nis still going on?\" asked Bambang.<\/p>\n
Head of the Pulogadung police precinct, Maj. Soekiman, who was
\nassigned to lead the hunt for the suspect, told reporters: \"In
\nthe name of God, I swear that I we have not made any arrest.\"<\/p>\n
Noenang, married with three children, quit his position only
\nlast week as head of the drugs unit at the city police
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n
Friday's murder is currently believed to have been the
\nculmination of a heated argument between the passenger and the
\nofficer that ensued after Noenang's jeep brushed the bajaj.<\/p>\n
The officer, wearing civilian clothes, is said to have stopped
\nand spoken with the driver of the bajaj, which was carrying one
\npassenger.<\/p>\n
According to police sources, the passenger -- described by
\nwitnesses as a \"well-built\" man -- was upset about the delay
\ncaused by the accident, and then shouted obscene words at the
\npolice officer.<\/p>\n
Offended, Noenang eyeballed the angry passenger and approached
\nhim only to be stabbed in the abdomen. The passenger then fled
\nthe scene, as did the bajaj driver, identified only as \"Iwan\".<\/p>\n
Police officers declined to comment on suggestions that the
\nsuspect had killed Noenang because the officer had been rude to
\nhim.<\/p>\n
At the Pulogadung police sub-precinct station yesterday,
\nSarmin, the bajaj's mechanic, said that Iwan had been \"picked up\"
\nby police on Saturday morning for interrogation. (bsr)<\/p>",
