Major traffic accidents<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): June 1992: An inter-city bus overturned on the
\nJakarta-Cikampek toll road after it smashed into the safety fence
\nat the side of the road. Seventeen people were killed and 42
\nothers injured. The driver said he lost control of the vehicle
\nbecause he was tired.<\/p>\n
September 1992: A trailer loaded with 24 tons of steel wires
\nhit the median line of Jl. R.E. Martadinata, Ancol, North
\nJakarta, and smashed into a public minibus which was coming from
\nthe opposite direction. Seven people were killed.<\/p>\n
February 1993: A truck hit and killed five passengers who were
\ngetting off a bus at the gate of the Jagorawi toll road in
\nCawang. The truck driver said he attempted to overtake the bus,
\nbut the road was very slippery and he could not stop his vehicle.<\/p>\n
March 1993: A bus hit a truck carrying sand on the Jakarta-
\nCikampek toll road, killing five people and injuring 21 others.
\nThe bus rolled over several times before stopping on the opposite
\nside of the road.<\/p>\n
March 1994: A Metromini city bus plunged into the Sunter
\nriver, North Jakarta, killing 33 passengers. The driver could not
\ncontrol the speeding vehicle when a car stopped suddenly in front
\nof it. He turned the vehicle to the left, which sent it plunging
\ninto the river.<\/p>\n
March 1994: A sedan, trying to avoid a taxi which braked
\nsuddenly, hit a group of high school students who were walking on
\nthe roadside of Jl. Simpruk Golf, Central Jakarta. Five students
\nwere killed.<\/p>\n
July 1994: A speeding inter-city bus hit another bus which was
\nparked at the side of the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road because of
\nengine trouble. Ten people were killed, 18 others injured.<\/p>\n
November 1994: A bus on the Jakarta-Bogor route hit the median
\nof the Jakarta-Bogor toll road, smashing a minibus which was
\ncoming from the opposite direction. Nine people were killed. The
\ndriver said he was sleepy.<\/p>\n
March 5, 1996: An overloaded bus overturned and exploded on
\nthe Merak-Jakarta toll road. Six people were burned beyond
\nrecognition, 37 others were injured. (sim)<\/p>",
