Major Buddhist sect plans to open seminaries<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): One of Indonesia's main Buddhist sects is
\nplanning to open up seminaries in various parts of the country.<\/p>\n
The Niciren Sosyu announced yesterday that these seminaries,
\nto be called Buddhist centers, will allow its 1.2 million
\nfollowers in Indonesia to explore their religion in greater
\ndepth.<\/p>\n
Kresno Abianto Soekarno, head of the sect's steering committee
\nfor tomorrow's Waisak celebration, which marks Buddha's Day of
\nEnlightenment, the centers will be run along the same lines as
\nthe nation's Moslem boarding schools (pesantrens) and Catholic
\nseminaries.<\/p>\n
\"It's high time that we promote our religious activities
\nbecause so far Niciren Sosyu Buddhists are known only for their
\nsocial endeavors,\" Kresno was quoted by the Antara news agency as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
Niciren Sosyu now runs one such center, the Vihara
\nSadaparibhuta, in Megamendung, West Java, which will also be the
\ncenter of the Waisak celebration tomorrow.<\/p>\n
The ceremony will be headed by its chairperson K. Senosoenoto
\nand attended by some 2,000 followers from all over the country,
\nKresno said.<\/p>\n
Niciren Sosyu Buddha is one of Buddhists sects recognized by
\nthe Ministry of Religious Affairs but lies outside the Indonesian
\nBuddhist Council. The total number of Buddhist followers in
\nIndonesia is estimated at around six million. (11)<\/p>",
