Major blazes hit South Jakarta<\/p>\n

Two fires broke out in South Jakarta early Wednesday morning,
\ncausing billions of rupiah in losses and heavy traffic on the
\nfirst day that offices opened after the Idul Fitri holiday.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of houses in densely populated Kebayoran Lama burned
\ndown in the first blaze, the cause of which the police and
\nfirefighters have yet to determine.<\/p>\n
No fatalities were reported in the fire.<\/p>\n
Residents evacuated their belongings and attempted to put out
\nthe fire before firefighters arrived one hour after it was
\nreported.<\/p>\n
Later at dawn, a fire flared in a medicine storeroom in the
\nD'Best shopping complex on Jl. Fatmawati.<\/p>\n
The firefighters took over six hours to extinguish the fire,
\nwhich originated in the basement.<\/p>\n
The head of the fire brigade unit, Achmad MSC, said the blaze
\nwas most likely caused by a short circuit.<\/p>\n
\"It was difficult to contain the fire because there was no
\nventilation in the room, so we had to knock down one wall ...
\nBesides boxes of medicine, a generator and diesel fuel were also
\nstored in the room,\" he explained.<\/p>\n
The storeroom was owned by medicine distributor PT Matolindo
\nPrimantara.<\/p>\n
One company staff member, Ahmadi, said most of the medicine
\nwas imported and waiting for distribution.<\/p>\n
\"The losses incurred may reach more than Rp 1 billion,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
City fire department spokesman Amanudin said the storeroom
\nfailed to meet standard safety requirements for storing chemical
\nsubstances because it was located in the basement of the
\nbuilding.<\/p>",
