Maintaining security<\/p>\n

One newspaper recently carried a news report about an
\nagreement between religion-based mass organizations in Surabaya
\nto work together in maintaining security and driving away all
\nkinds of provocation which may trigger a riot.<\/p>\n
We have also learned from the media that Muslims from all over
\nCentral Java have urged the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the
\nNational Police (Polri) to take firm action against rioters and
\nprovocateurs trying to disrupt security.<\/p>\n
I agree with the agreement made in Surabaya because it shows
\nour concern in maintaining security. Besides, in my opinion,
\nsecurity problems are not solely the responsibility of security
\napparatuses (TNI and Polri) but are the responsibility of all
\ncommunity members. It is my hope, however, that members of the
\ncommunity will not take the law into their own hands. Everything
\nmust be consulted with the TNI and Polri. In this way uncalled
\nfor consequences will be avoided. It must be remembered that
\nIndonesia is a law-based state. It means that the law must be
\nupheld and enforced.<\/p>\n
It is also my hope that rumors that riots related to ethnicity
\nand religion will spread to other regions will remain only
\nrumors. Nevertheless, all community members must always be
\nvigilant over the possibility that trouble will spread. They must
\nalso be able to control their emotions so as not to be influenced
\nby misleading rumors to do things that may disrupt national unity
\nand integrity. Hopefully the riots breaking out in a number of
\nregions across the country will be put down. May the Indonesian
\nnation and state be able to overcome all problems, particularly
\nthe multidimensional crisis.<\/p>\n
