Main witness absent at murder reconstruction<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): Marsiyem, wife of slain journalist Fuad
\nMuhammad Syafruddin and the main witness in the investigation
\ninto his murder, was too ill to attend yesterday a police
\nreconstruction of the murder.<\/p>\n
Her lawyer Budi Hartono of the Yogyakarta legal aid office was
\nquoted by Antara as saying that Marsiyem was suffering from
\ndepression and that psychiatrist R. Soemardi Prawirodi, who
\nexamined her Sunday, had ordered her to hospital for a week for
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
"She must rest and not see visitors for some time so she can
\nrecover, both physically and psychologically," Budi quoted the
\ndoctor as saying.<\/p>\n
Budi said her absence from the reconstruction rendered the
\nprocedure legally defective. He spoke to the press before the
\nreconstruction took place.<\/p>\n
Marsiyem opened the door of her house to a man asking for her
\nhusband, better known as Udin, on Aug. 13 at 10.30 p.m. After
\nletting him in she went to the back of the house only to hear
\nUdin scream for help minutes later.<\/p>\n
The journalist, known for his critical reporting on the
\nYogyakarta and Bantul regency administration policies, died three
\ndays later without regaining consciousness. The murder has had
\nwide media coverage because of a number of reported oddities in
\nthe police investigation procedure.<\/p>\n
Budi, and Marsiyem's other lawyers, attended the
\nreconstruction because Sujarah, also a legal aid office client
\nand one of the witnesses, took part in the procedure.<\/p>\n
D.S., the suspected killer whose arrest has attracted harsh
\ncriticism from the public because of reported violations in the
\nprocedure, was accompanied to the reconstruction by his lawyer
\nEko Widianto.<\/p>\n
Police first held a reconstruction on Nov. 16, without
\nMarsiyem or D.S. Following public outcry the police planned yet
\nanother reconstruction, for Nov. 29, but called it off without
\nexplanation.<\/p>\n
Yogyakarta police carried out the reconstruction because their
\ndossier on the suspected killer was rejected for being incomplete
