Main suspect in land scam still free<\/p>\n
BEKASI (JP): The Bekasi Prosecutor's Office has not as yet
\narrested a former subdistrict head believed to be the main
\nsuspect in a notorious land scam.<\/p>\n
\"Ompin Sopiandi, former head of Muara Gembong subdistrict, has
\nnow become the main suspect in the scam. But we don't need to
\narrest him now because he is cooperative enough during the
\nquestioning sessions,\" the head of Bekasi Prosecutor's Office,
\nChaeruman Harahap told reporters over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Ompin is accused of illegally selling state land in Muara
\nGembong, where local farmers had fish ponds, to a private
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
The case was made public after the farmers went to the Bekasi
\nCity Council in April, reporting that the subdistrict head had
\nsold the land.<\/p>\n
The disgruntled farmers also said that they were given between
\nRp 150 and Rp 250 in compensation for each square meter of land
\nand told to give up the fish ponds.<\/p>\n
Bekasi Regent Mochamad Djamhari had earlier defended Ompin,
\nsaying that the farmers' report was false. The regent said he had
\nnot issued a single permit allowing any firm to carry out land
\nclearance in Muara Gembong.<\/p>\n
The special team set to investigate the scam has questioned
\nthe suspect twice and is making list of the suspect's wealth,
\nChaeruman said. \"If his wealth proves to be obtained from the
\nland scam, his wealth will be confiscated.\"<\/p>\n
Chaeruman refused to reveal the worth of the suspect's wealth,
\nsaying that his office had not yet completed the details.
\nDemoted after the case was made public, Ompin is now working
\nat the Bekasi Regency Secretariat Office. (12\/sur)<\/p>",
