Maid rewarded for saving children<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): A Filipina maid who saved three children when
\na fire broke out at an apartment block here has received a
\ncommendation from Philippine President Fidel Ramos and been
\nrewarded by her employers.<\/p>\n
Zenaida Recarte, 20, who hurt her head and back while taking
\nher three charges downstairs from their 16th-story flat, was
\npresented with a photocopy of the commendation by Philippine
\nembassy officials, The Sunday Times said.<\/p>\n
From her grateful Singaporean employers, she received a gold
\nnecklace and pendant as a reward, it said.<\/p>\n
Ramos reportedly praised Recarte's presence of mind, adding
\nthat her action had confirmed Filipinos' belief that overseas
\ncontract workers were "modern-day heroes."<\/p>\n
Recarte first carried a one-year-old boy and then led his
\nolder sisters aged 10 and five down the stairs from their flat
\nduring the Christmas Day fire which sparked an emergency
\nevacuation.<\/p>\n
She jumped from the second-story with the boy, hurting her
\nhead and back, but, despite the pain, returned to bring the girls
\nto safety. She said later that her only thought was to save the
\nchildren.<\/p>",
