Maid policy stays<\/p>\n
Malaysians are generally tolerant when it comes to religion
\nand so far foreign maids are free to work in any household,
\nregardless of religious faiths.<\/p>\n
When the idea was mooted that foreign maids be deployed in
\nhouseholds based on their religious beliefs, employment agencies
\nand employers reacted with concern over the difficulties they
\nwould face if such a policy was implemented. Many Muslim foreign
\nmaids are employed in non-Muslims households and there would have
\nto be another costly recruitment and deployment exercise.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has
\ndecided to retain the existing policy on recruiting foreign
\nmaids.<\/p>\n
However, safeguards to ensure that families which hire foreign
\nmaids accommodate their religious sensitivities and obligations
\nshould be strictly enforced. Under the existing policy, there
\nmust be an agreement between the employer and foreign maid on
\nmatters like religious freedom.<\/p>\n
Given the occasional abuse of maids by employers, there is an
\nobvious need for an effective mechanism for foreign maids to air
\ngrievances and seek quick redress from employers. There should
\nalso be an equivalent avenue for employers unhappy with their
\nmaids.<\/p>\n
Employers of foreign maids must realize that they have
\nobligations and reponsibilities. They must care for them, just as
\nthey expect the foreign maids to take good care of their
\nfamilies.<\/p>\n
