        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 Mahfud MD, former Coordinating Minister for Political,\nLegal and Security Affairs, has criticised Indonesia\u2019s participation in\nthe Board of Peace (BoP), an initiative launched by US President Donald\nTrump, as insufficiently strategic.<\/p>\n<p>Mahfud stated that many parties have protested Indonesia\u2019s\ninvolvement in the forum from the outset. He identified one of the\nprincipal concerns as the imbalanced composition of BoP membership.<\/p>\n<p>The forum, which addresses peace in Palestine and the Middle East,\nnotably excludes Palestinian representation from its inception. \u201cIt is\nimpossible to discuss justice without including the party that would be\nsubject to the object of peace decisions,\u201d Mahfud said during a meeting\nin Senen, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (10 March 2026).<\/p>\n<p>He expressed uncertainty about the forum\u2019s legal standing, including\nthe basis for its establishment and the nature of agreements it would\nproduce. \u201cWhat exactly is it? What is it discussing? Is the product a\nmultilateral agreement, a memorandum of understanding, or something\nelse? It is unclear,\u201d he stated emphatically.<\/p>\n<p>Mahfud also cited widespread criticism from the public, as many\nconsider the BoP\u2019s existence inconsistent with the Bandung Principles \u2014\nthe ten fundamental principles of international relations agreed upon at\nthe Asia-Africa Conference held in Bandung, Indonesia, in 1955.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mahfud, these principles emphasise equality among\nnations, rejection of colonialism and aggression, and recognition of\nevery nation\u2019s right to self-determination. \u201cThe Board of Peace does not\nappear to embody these principles; the Bandung Principles are not\nevident in it,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, the government indicated that Indonesia could\nwithdraw from the BoP should the forum fail to provide benefits.\nHowever, Mahfud assessed that recent developments in the Middle East\nshould prompt Indonesia to reconsider its continued participation in the\nBoP.<\/p>",
