        "content": "<p>Mahathir warns against rioting<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Malaysia can surmount its economic woes if<br>\nriots are avoided as the government crafts its recovery plan, the<br>\nprime minister said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"We can overcome this economic crisis if everybody continues<br>\nto be calm and there's no rioting,\" Prime Minister Mahathir<br>\nMohamad told a group of contractors.<\/p>\n<p>Rumors of ethnic riots swept through the capital two weeks<br>\nago, which sparked panic buying at supermarkets and forced many<br>\nto rush home from work and bolt their doors.<\/p>\n<p>Three people have been arrested under the Internal Security<br>\nAct, which permits jail without trial, for allegedly circulating<br>\nriot rumors on the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir said last weekend the government may adopt drastic<br>\nnew measures to prevent further economic deterioration. He warned<br>\nsome people might be shocked.<\/p>",
