Mahathir strikes in campaign<\/p>\n
PERMATANG PAUH, Malaysia (AP): Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
\non Saturday took his campaign into the home district of his
\ngreatest political foe, Anwar Ibrahim, at the tail end of
\nelectioneering, which the opposition has denounced as the
\ndirtiest ever.<\/p>\n
In a speech to voters two days before Monday's crucial general
\nelection, Mahathir described Anwar as a former friend and
\nprotege.<\/p>\n
\"But unfortunately for him and for me, I discovered he had
\nsuch horrible morals,\" said the 73-year-old leader, who sacked
\nAnwar last September. \"Anyone who is so depraved cannot become
\nprime minister,\" he told a gathering of 2,000 supporters of the
\ngoverning National Front.<\/p>\n
The ousted deputy prime minister's wife, Azizah Ismail, is
\ncontesting in Permatang Pauh, a rural, Malay-dominated district
\nwhich Anwar had represented for 16 years.<\/p>\n
Azizah, who heads the National Justice Party, is facing
\nIbrahim Saad, her husband's former political secretary, in a
\nbattle which is symbolic for both sides.<\/p>",
