        "content": "<p>Mahathir stakes claim to Spratlys<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on<br>\nSunday the reefs in the Spratly Islands on which Malaysia had<br>\nbuilt structures were part of its territory, dismissing<br>\nPhilippine claims.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir said the Peninjau and Siput reefs were within its<br>\nExclusive Economic Zone and therefore Malaysia had not encroached<br>\non another country's territory.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week the Philippines defense department accused<br>\nthe Malaysians of building structures on Investigator Shoal,<br>\nwhich the Philippines calls Pawikan Shoal.<\/p>\n<p>Kuala Lumpur has rejected the allegations, insisting the<br>\nsandbar is part of its territory and civilians there were<br>\nresearchers and scientists.<\/p>",
