        "content": "<p>Mahathir plays the Malay card<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has<br>\naccused foreign currency and stock market speculators of wrecking<br>\nMalaysia's affirmative action program to help ethnic Malays,<br>\nreports said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir, quoted by the state news agency Bernama, said Malays<br>\nand other indigenous races were once again \"only among the low-<br>\npaid workers, hawkers and petty traders\" following the economic<br>\ncrisis which swept Asia from July 1997.<\/p>\n<p>The premier, speaking at a dinner in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe,<br>\non the sidelines of the Southern Africa International Dialogue,<br>\nsaid Malaysia must start all over again with its New Economic<br>\nPolicy.<\/p>\n<p>But he vowed that it would not be abandoned despite what he<br>\ncalled objections to it from the International Monetary Fund<br>\n(IMF) and the Western media.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Thailand, South Korea and Indonesia, Malaysia refused<br>\nto turn to the IMF for help when the economic crisis hit.<\/p>",
