Mahathir inducts five new faces into cabinet<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (Agencies): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir
\nMohamad yesterday announced five appointments to his new cabinet
\nbut left key ministerial positions unchanged.<\/p>\n
Mahathir appointed new ministers to the youth and sports,
\nnational unity and health ministries and the newly created
\nEntrepreneur Development Ministry as well as a minister to the
\nprime minister's department, but left the finance, trade and
\nindustry, information and home ministries unchanged.<\/p>\n
The new ministers are Abdul Hamid Othman, minister in the
\nprime minister's office; Muhyiddin Yassin, youth and sports
\nminister; Chua Jui Meng, health minister; Zaleha Ismail, national
\nunity minister, and Mustapha Mohamed, entrepreneur development
\nminister.<\/p>\n
Mahathir also reshuffled several cabinet postings. Energy,
\nPosts and Telecommunications Minister Samy Vellu is now minister
\nof works while Leo Moggie, the former works minister, assumes
\nSamy Vellu's portfolio.<\/p>\n
Defense Minister Najib Tun Razak has been shifted to the
\nEducation Ministry and his old job has been taken over by former
\nlaw minister Syed Hamid Albar.<\/p>\n
Former education minister Sulaiman Daud is now agriculture
\nminister, taking over from Sanusi Junid who vacated his
\nparliamentary post for a state seat.<\/p>\n
The Law Ministry portfolio will now be handled by Abang Abu
\nBakar Mustapha.<\/p>\n
Mahathir won a resounding victory in Malaysia's April 24-25
\ngeneral elections. His ruling National Front coalition took 162
\nof the 192 parliamentary seats and 10 of the 11 state
\nlegislatures contested.<\/p>\n
The coalition polled more than 64 percent of the popular vote
\nagainst just over 53 percent in the 1990 elections. The electoral
\nvictory was seen by analysts as a strong mandate for Mahathir and
\nhis economic program from the electorate.<\/p>\n
