        "content": "<p>Mahathir battles corruption in party<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The unprecedented sacking of a member of<br>\nMalaysia's ruling party for allegedly spending millions to buy a<br>\nkey post shows corruption is still rife here, analysts said<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"It not only proves that money politics is still very much<br>\npart of party culture, but also shows that the stakes have grown<br>\nin volume along with general national prosperity,\" said a<br>\npolitical analyst who prefers anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>In an unprecedented move, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on<br>\nSaturday expelled Tajuddin Rahman, a member of his United Malays<br>\nNational Organization (UMNO), for allegedly spending six million<br>\nringgit (US$2.4 million), hoping to get elected a division leader<br>\nin northern Perak state.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir also announced the setting up of an independent team<br>\nto investigate corruption in the party.<\/p>",
