Magelang landslide kills two workers<\/p>\n

Two out of 11 laborers constructing an embankment were buried
\nalive by a landslide in Kragilan village in Magelang regency,
\nCentral Java, on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The bodies of Sutoyo, 38, and Rebi, 36, were recovered after
\nalmost three hours of excavating.<\/p>\n
The disaster occurred at 8 a.m. when the 11 workers were
\nbuilding an embarkment to prevent erosion and landslides at the
\nGejakan River in Kragilan, Pakis district.<\/p>\n
But a seven-meter-high cliff suddenly collapsed and buried two
\nof the construction workers, witnesses and survivors said.<\/p>\n
The embarkment project, worth Rp 113 million (US$12,555), has
\nbeen contracted to CV Lintang Gemilang by the Magelang
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
The workers screamed out for help, and most of them managed to
\nescape the landslide, except for the two, both residents of
\nneighboring Kwiden village.<\/p>\n
Sutoyo and Rebi failed to escape as they were working closest
\nto the cliff face.<\/p>\n
Karnain, 40, one of the laborers, said the landslide struck
\nthree days after heavy rain in several parts of Magelang,
\nincluding Kragilan.<\/p>\n
The rain made the earth unstable, he added.<\/p>\n
\"Today (Thursday) was the 15th day of construction. When we
\nwere laying the foundation, the landslide suddenly struck. There
\nwas a thunderous noise when the soil moved very quickly,\" Karnain
\nrecalled.<\/p>\n
\"Luckily, I managed to flee but two others failed to escape,\"
\nhe cried.<\/p>\n
Some of the nine survivors -- Jumakhir, Kamiso, Suyanto,
\nBedok, Karnain, Hardi, Slamet, Bolot and Subadi -- were treated
\nat a local health community center for slight injuries.<\/p>\n
The Magelang administration gave 100 kilograms of rice and
\npackages of instant noodles in assistance to the bereaved
\nfamilies of the two dead victims.<\/p>\n
Similar assistance also came from CV Lintang Gemilang, which
\nprovided the families with Rp 500,000 each.<\/p>\n
Landslides often hit during the wet season, and are largely
\nblamed on deforestation due to unchecked illegal logging. This
\nyear's rainy season is almost over in most parts of the country.<\/p>\n
Last April, a landslide killed at least 12 people and left
\nthree others missing in Cililin, 60 kilometers west of Bandung,
\nWest Java.<\/p>\n
Days later, 42 people perished when their passenger bus was
\nswept away in a landslide while traveling along the Ujung Gading-
\nPanti road that connects Padang and Medan on Sumatra island.<\/p>",
