        "content": "<p>Magazine ban<\/p>\n<p>From Sinar Pagi<\/p>\n<p>I express my support to the recent demonstrations launched by<br>\nreporters and students following the revocation of publishing<br>\nlicenses of three magazines -- Tempo, Editor and DeTIK.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously as a result of the government's ban, many reporters<br>\nand employees have lost their jobs, which is a great concern to<br>\nthe All-Indonesia Journalists Union (PWI) and Association of<br>\nNewspapers Publishers (SPS).<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto has emphasized that the press has the right<br>\nto criticize the government, but the criticism must be<br>\nconstructive. So, even if the three magazines have made a<br>\nmistake, their chief editors should be held responsible and<br>\nbrought to court, but not punished by the revocation of the<br>\npublishing licenses.<\/p>\n<p>The society is expecting the era of openness to continue. The<br>\nban, however, indicates that cries of openness are nothing but<br>\nempty words or sheer slogans.
