Madura proves love for cows<\/p>\n
PAMEKASAN, East Java: Eighty percent of poor villagers on the
\nisland of Madura who are eligible for a government aid program
\nsay they want to use the money to buy cows.<\/p>\n
The government has identified villages in four districts in
\nMadura -- Bangkalan, Sampang, Sumenep and Pamekasan -- as
\ndeserving of aid for impoverished villages.<\/p>\n
Hasbullah, a governor's aide who oversees the island, said he
\nwas overwhelmed by villagers' requests that the government give
\nthem cows because they are experienced in cattle breeding.<\/p>\n
\"Although none of the four districts have a sizable prairie,
\nthey are eager to breed and produce quality cattle,\" he said as
\nquoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"Madura islanders have unquestionable skills in cattle
\nbreeding because historically, they have close relations with
\ncows, which have become a symbol of their culture,\" he said.
